    The Story of Silver Raito

Cheerful voices poured out of the bright windows along the castle, illuminating the cold winter night. My breath came out in quick out puffs that dissipated on the wind. While the rich were feasting, I would be thieving.

I pulled my ratty cloak tighter around my shivering body, wishing for a warm cup of cocoa, or a small slice of pie to warm me up. I could smell the rich aroma of cinnamon and apple from my perch in the old oak tree, just a few meters away from the west wing of the Roil castle. So close, I could almost taste it. Alas, it was only a scent.

I sighed and unclasped a small vial, downing its contents with a grimace. In a few short moments, I could see right through my black paws. I wiped my mouth against the fabric of my cloak. "Disgusting... Ah, well, at least it worked." I scampered down the tree, and in the dark of the night, I slipped into the castle.

I skirted down the corridors, past the banquet halls, and up stairwells. My stomach rumbled and my mouth watered as I imagined all the delicious foods they must have been dining on. Sugary sweets, fresh fruits, flaky pastries, and perfectly cooked meats- oh, the delicacies! Hush, I reprimanded my gut, I will feast for months after this heist. No longer will I be digging through trash cans and begging for coins. I had to hold back the urge to laugh whenever a castle guard walked right past me. My invisibility potion had worked perfectly.

My source had sworn that the Queen had a stash of valuable jewels hidden in the castle laboratory. It had cost me a bit to coax the information out of that low-life, but it would be worth it after I sold a few rubies and emeralds. I pushed the heavy wooden door open with a soft groan, and gasped. When he had said 'laboratory', I would never have imagined a room as amazing as this one.

  5. It was chock full of ingredients and bubbling potions that glowed from their shelves. A whole wall was covered with thick books. So, so many books. I spotted a few that I had read. One particular thing caught my eye. A warlock's cloak. It was jet black and dotted with red patches. The previous owner must have hung it up long ago, for it was collecting dust, and felt cold to the touch. I itched to try it on. Warlock cloaks were special, and increased the wearer's magical ability. They were custom made, for only the warlock it was made for could use the cloak to its full ability.
    "It's a beauty, isn't it?"
I whipped around. My potion had worn off! And the one who had discovered me was none other than the queen, Peppy Roil. I froze. Should I run? Make an excuse? My silver eyes darted to the open window. Would I survive the fall?

    "What is your name, warlock?"

I stared at her warily, eying the large ring on her finger. Must've cost a fortune. Maybe I could steal it some other day... If there was one. "Silver Raito. And I am no warlock." That was true. I was no where near the full level of a castle warlock.

"Silver eyes, black fur... You raided the medical center on the east side of the kingdom just a month ago!" she exclaimed.

I shrugged. "I needed ingredients for my invisibility potion." Now was my chance. I would step back, and then sail out of the window while using my 'float' spell. It would slow my ascent and- she shoved something into my arms.

    "Huh?" It was the cloak.

The Queen nodded. "Try it on. No one has ever worn that one."

I looked at her skeptically before pulling off my own cloak. It looked terrible compared to the true warlock's cloak. I slipped it over my shoulders and pinned the clasp. It fit like a glove and felt as warm as my late mother's hug.
She smiled. "You belong here, Silver Raito. That cloak was made to fit only someone who could be a true castle warlock. That someone is you."

My jaw fell open. "Wait a second. I'm still digesting that sentence." Me? A castle warlock? I was a gutter-wolf, who stole potions and learned spells from discarded library books.

"What is your answer?" the Queen asked.

I grasped the cloak even tighter and grinned. "First, can I go down to the banquet halls? The feast is still going on, right?"

Her Majesty laughed. "Of course, Silver. Of course."
